So You Think You Can Dance – The Top 16 (Season 9 Episode 9)
Natalie and I are back for another week of SYTYCD. We were treated to a Charlie Chaplin inspired black and white Tyce choreographed opening dance routine. Everybody had funny moustaches and there was one colored red. The routine had good acting though we didn’t love that opening act, it was a bit too weird. Cat looks absolutely stunning tonight. Natalie loves the old Hollywood glamour look. We’re sadly going to lose two more dancers tonight. And in other sad news there’s a two week break after this due to the Olympics. Emmy winning actress Christina Applegate joins as the third guest judge. Let’s see how the Top 16 perform and then see who gets cut.
Tiffany & George – Hip Hop by Tabitha and Napoleon
It was a fun, wanna get down baby themed act. Good performance from both – how could Nappy Tabs go wrong with two such fantastic and multi-faceted dancers? They even brought it all together with the acting too. It was another top notch performance. George is still at the forefront of guy performances. If Tiffany keeps this up she’ll continue to rise in our standings.
Amber & Brandon – Jazz by Ray Leeper
Eliminations last week brought them into this pairing so we’ll have to see how they perform together. She’s wearing a very scandalous outfit. He lifts her like she’s a feather. They definitely have chemistry. Great performance – fun, sexy, lots of passion, great music and choreography. You wouldn’t be able to tell that Brandon is a stepper.
Janelle & Dareian – Latin Ballroom (Cha Cha) by Pasha
Any now Call Me Maybe has invaded SYTYCD. Who knew you could Cha Cha to that? It was fun and full of tricks. Not so technically correct though. The whole time Natalie was critiquing their feet and then Mary chimed in with the same critique. Overall we thought they did a good job. It was good, not great.
Lindsay & Cole – Contemporary by Mandy Moore
For me the best part of the dance was the lighting in the background. I much more liked the shadows than the actual bodies. All that being said it was a good routine.
Amelia & Will – Jazz by Mandy Moore
Great dance. Very cool costumes. They’re so in sync with each other. I thought it was a bit weird for my taste. I see how the judges are split on them this week.
Audrey & Matt – Salsa by Liz Lira
They didn’t fail at salsa. It was a really hard routine full of lots of spin and physically intense moves. There dancing missed the salsa rhythm – they missed the tick. All things considered they did OK. Let’s hope it doesn’t detract from their confidence going forward.
Whitney & Chehon – Contemporary by Stacy Tookey
Absolutely awesome performance. The whole routine definitely played to Chehon’s strenghts and Whitney kept up 110% percent. You wouldn’t know she’s a ballroom dancer, you couldn’t see any of it. The story was beautiful not to mention full of amazing acrobatics. Best routine of the night so far.
Eliana & Cyrus – Hip Hop by Tabitha & Napoleon
Not our favorite routine but it was good. Eliana did hip hop really well. I think it goes to show how good of dancer she is. I thought Cyrus did well overall but he seemed a bit weak. Hip Hop seems to me to be within the genre of his animation, maybe I’m wrong?
Now time to see who’s at the bottom this week based on voting. 3 girls – Amber, Lindsay, Eliana. 3 Guys – George, Brandon, Dareian. Amber, Eliana, Brandon and Dareian are asked to dance again and have to do solos.
Amber – Pretty terrible solo. Enough said.
Brandon – Not good either. Too angry for me. An
Eliana – I can’t believe she’s even in the bottom. She is such a beautiful dancer. She knows when to breathe and pause. Great solo.
Dareian – I’m not surprised he’s in the bottom. He is much better than Brandon. He had a couple really good moves in the solo. Very good overall.
And now for the decisions … Lindsay and Eliana were saved meaning Amber has been eliminated. George and Dareian were saved meaning that Brandon didn’t make it. Too bad they didn’t get another chance after dancing together tonight for the first time. They showed some promise as a partnership. I’m glad Eliana was saved, she’s still my favorite girl.
Remember that we have a two week break due to the Olympics. Catch you when they return in August. Enjoy!Tags: dance, dancing, fox, recap, review, So You Think You Can Dance, SYTYCD
