I May Just Become a Two Tablet User Yet
I know you’re all going to call me a blasphemer when I say I want to use another tablet other then my iPad but yeah I’m going to say it anyway. I’m intrigued by Microsoft’s upcoming tablet, Surface, and I think I want to get one. Oh wait, you haven’t heard about the Surface yet. Let me tell you all about it.
Yesterday Microsoft put on this semi-mysterious press event. At it they announced a new Microsoft product that they’re calling the Surface. It’s a new tablet and it looks like this. It comes in a 10.6″ screen and it powered by Windows 8. It will come in two distinct versions, one with an ARM processor and Windows RT (made specifically for tablets) and another with Intel processors (2nm Ivy Bridge) running the full desktop version of Windows 8. They’ll also come in slightly different thicknesses and weights. The Intel version will ship with a magnesium case that doubles as a keyboard when open and a built in kickstand. it will also have an optional digital pen.
So now that we know what it looks like here’s why I feel that I want it. Even though I’ve converted to being an Apple guy (I have no Windows computers at home) there are still just some things that you can’t do on a Mac. A tablet (that I hope has as good technical specs as the iPad) running a full (or even the RT version of Windows 8) offers so much. You’ll be able to download those Windows only apps and get the job done. I also love that it comes with a case that doubles as a full keyboard. As a blogger I always long for the full keyboard. I know I could buy one for the iPad but I like how Microsoft thought ahead to put this in. I’m just digging on the product idea and I guess a little part of me is still connected to Windows.
At this time they’re light on the full product specs and we also don’t know how long we’ll have to wait for them to come out. They also haven’t announced the price point, though I gather it’ll be competitive with the iPad in order to sell. In my eyes getting one would supplement, not replace my computers. Who knows, in six months I may not want one anymore.
