So You Think You Can Dance – Season 9 Episode 2 (Los Angeles)
So my girlfriend, Natalie Spiers, and I are back for week two and we just deplaned at LAX for these auditions. We’ve got another two hours worth and we’re just staying in Los Angeles. Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Mitch from Modern Family, joins Mary and Nigel as the third judge. Now let’s see some dancing!
Alexa Anderson – 19 – Arizona
Vegas! Almost a top twenty contestant from last season Alexa is back at it to try again. There was no discussion, straight to Vegas. GF says no surprise and even though I didn’t watch last season I totally agree.
Jontel “Johnny Wacks” Gibson – Wacking
Choreography. He’s been doing it for a year after finding it on YouTube. Then he started practicing himself. (Yes, your minds should be in the gutter right now). Music, outfit and dance style seem right out of the 70s. I like it. She likes it too and says he has good musicality and look very controlled for something that could easily look chaotic. Jesse quote of the night so far, “If Lenny Kravitz were a Russian nesting doll then you’d be the little guy inside.”
Eliana Girard – Contemporary Ballet
Vegas! Absolutely fantastic and beautiful. I felt a lot of emotion. It was a full on performance. Nigel called her one of the best girls this year. I’m not sure I’m ready to jump the gun but she was pretty awesome.
Lot’s of partners in LA. We’re gonna get to watch a pair of very “outgoing” twins. Haven’t watched them dance yet but they’re quite the entertaining pair.
Nick and James Aragon “The NinJa Twins” – Man in the Mirror – Contemporary
Disqualified. Definitely the most entertainment in the night so far. I wonder how the dancing is. For all I know they could wow us. And they finally started dancing. I think they’d make a good Vegas act with some training (and some more glitter). Not sure they’re the fit for the show. Apparently they weren’t in the right age group – I guess you can only be as old as 30. Totally feel good.
Sam Lenarz – 18 – CA
Choreography. Beautiful. Light, airy and ethereal. I agree with Jesse, it was sad but beautiful. He story is very touching. I agree with the choreography.
Caley Carr – Tap Dancing
Choreography. On first glance Caley looks nothing like a tap dancer though from where I sit it definitely looks like he knows what he’s doing. I think he brought the rhythm. He brought a freshness to a style that is traditionally single faceted.
Megan Branch
Vegas! We didn’t like the style but she’s got talent.
Cole Horibe – Martial Arts Style Dancing
Vegas! Seemed very different to me and I was impressed. We think choreography. Seems the judges love him.
David Matz – Circus Wheel
Choreography. Certainly a different type of performance. It looks very hard and there’s a lot of spinning going on. I don’t know how he’s not getting sick. He looks pretty good at it, not that I’d know what was good and what wasn’t. He seems to be dancing with a lot of passion. I’m impressed. Not surprised about the choreography, he did a lot of spinning, not as much dancing.
Jonathan Anzalone – Breakdance
Choreography. Wow. He has a lot of control and great musicality, but not a whole lot of . He’s crazy flexible too. I can’t believe he just put down his shirt for Nigel. The look on Nigel’s face was just priceless. I think he should be on stage with Channing Tatum in Magic Mike. Natalie thinks a pole would have been beneficial to his routine; she would have followed Jessie’s suit and stuck some dollar bills in his waistband. The show definitely warranted it.
Jasmine Mason – Jazz
Vegas!! Natalie says: it was almost as if she was suspended in moments in time. That routine was danced from the heart, and shone like a beacon. Gorgeous dancer who pulled the audience in instantly. I concur. No surprise she goes straight to Vegas.
Marshea Mason
Vegas!! Marshea’s story is one of triumph over tragedy. He could have been paralyzed from his car accident and happened to break his neck but he moved so well. Just to think six weeks ago he woke up from a coma. Beautiful dancer. Now we’ll have a brother sister pair from LA in Vegas.
Choreography
Proved to be too challenging for David, Jonathan, Caley and Johnny Wacks. Sam made it through.
Next auditions are in Hotlanta. Things are gonna get steamy. Check back in to see what Natalie and I think about that.
