Musing Review: New Girl – Kryptonite (S1, Ep2)
Is “New Girl” here to stay? After two episodes I’d say it definitely has good potential. It debuted last week to very good numbers for a comedy on Fox. I missed it live, but I caught the replay on Hulu. I decided to watch because I personally love Zoe Deschanel and I always tend to like her roles. After the first episode I liked it enough to give it another chance and I’m glad I did. I forewarn you of some potential spoiler material if you read on. I tried to keep it high level, but still …
This episode started with some change up. They replaced Coach (played by Damon Wayans Jr.) with a new character Winston (played by Lamorne Morris). I don’t know for sure but I guess the character Coach didn’t test too well. (EDIT: I have since found out he is on Happy Ending and that the two schedules did not work out, on pilot picked up before another. I said I guessed.) The writers pulled the “he used to be a roommate” trick so he could easily blend into the existing cast of male roommates. That plot trick seemed to work well as it was pretty seamless from my perspective.
The main storyline of the episode was Jess having to confront her ex-boyfriend in order get her stuff back. She ran out of that old apartment so quickly she barely grabbed anything. We got to see Jess try and confront her fears, then fail, only to be propped up with confidence by her new roommates. It was nice to see her finally “win” in the end. The subplot storyline centered on a room dispute between Schmidt and Winston where Winston wanted the bigger better room, that used to be his before he moved out. That was played out well as we saw some character development in Schmidt. He tries to come off as this “almost cocky” player but deep down also needs his friend’s approval. They tied the two story lines together at the end in a nice way with helping Jess out.
The episode was funny, the acting was good, and the story lines flowed well and together. I hope “New Girl” is here to stay.
Watch it Tuesday’s at 9:00pm on Fox. Also catch it on Hulu or Fox.com.fox, new girl, tv
